Wednesday August 12th was designated International Youth Day, by the UN General Assembly in 1999 and serves as an annual celebration of the role of young people as essential partners in change, and an opportunity to raise awareness of challenges and problems facing the world’s youth.
Lions Clubs International has developed a wide range of youth programmes. Whether it’s providing Leadership, Experience and Opportunity in Leo Clubs, sharing a positive message through the Lions’ Peace Poster competitions or delivering Lifeskills teaching support materials. Lions Clubs invest in the future of our children and young people and provide opportunities that help build communities of motivated and capable young people, or offer opportunities for individuals to get involved in helping others.
In Bexhill, Lions continue their long standing support of Pit-Stop Youth Trust, the Safety in Action training run by East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, School’s concerts and the Sidley Fun Day and Christmas Parade. In addition, for the past three years support has been given to the Bexhill Skatepark Action Group.
Other opportunities include; Young Achiever Award for dedicated community minded youngsters between 15-18 years of age. Young Leaders in Service Awards
celebrate 11-18 year olds who make a commitment to help others,
Lion Susan Taylor who leads on Youth programmes said “We are passionate about supporting children and young people in positive endeavors. We are always looking for new ways to engage with children and young people to build self esteem and help them achieve their potential”
Lion President Simon Edwards added “We aim to help the next generation be achievers, be aware and understand the needs of others and how by getting involved they can make a real difference to others and to themselves.”
