A Year as a Bexhill Lion
(as recited by Lion President Sue at the Club’s annual Charter Dinner)
At half past six, I drive away,
With flamingos in my boot, they don’t stay all day.
I leave them swaying in a garden, such a delight,
Then home for my cuppa as dawn brings light.
The twice-yearly Street Markets, September and May,
With stalls set at sunrise to brighten the day.
Cheeses from France, or warm crusty bread,
And tombola’s with treasures and prizes widespread.
Open Gardens was new, a first this year,
Where a young violinist moved many to tears.
With cakes and with plants, and books on display,
We raised funds for Brain Tumour Research in our own special way.
At Bexhill Carnival, we all take part,
Pulling our lion along in his cart.
Dressed as Morris Men dancing, or rockers so hip,
Or green-and-black aliens with our spaceship.
The Fairy Trail sparkles with magical things,
Found by children with wands and bright wings.
See tiny doors carved in wood, then use the clues
To find the wonders made from things we re-use.
Teddies’ Adventure is held by the sea;
They parachute down or bungee with glee.
Then ride in a boat, a plane in the sky,
And whoosh, how they cheer as they zip-wire by!
Our Dog Show and Cream Teas — an annual delight,
In a great snowy marquee that glimmers so white.
Scones, jam, and cream piled high on each plate,
While Jane Torvill judged dogs as they trotted in state.
The Remembrance Parade is a solemn affair,
Honouring the brave who can no longer be there.
With roads closed in silence, poppy wreaths lay,
For the fallen we cherish and honour each day.
December brings Christmas, all sparkle and song,
Santa Dash runners with dogs racing along.
Meet Santa in Wetherspoons — with Olaf and elves,
Where children make promises to behave themselves.
Though we dress up in fun and we laugh as we run,
Our mission is serious, raising funds one by one.
We help those in hardship, in trouble or strife,
To bring back their hope and the joy in their life.
So, if this small tale has brought smiles to you,
Why not join in and be part of our crew?
With fairies and flamingos, with teddies having fun —
Bexhill Lions serve proudly, united as one.
