Bexhill Lions Club

New Event launched

We recently held our first FUN Market for all the family on the lawns adjacent to the iconic De La Warr Pavilion.

The traders provided a great range of products, food stalls and a mobile bar. We also had children’s games and live entertainment,

so there really was something for everyone.

Hailsham Lions joined us and brought with them their pig race, Splat the Rat and Candy floss.

Uncle Bumble proved a great hit, especially corralling the youngsters and running the Hobby Horse races. Coconuts were being knocked off their stands, golf balls found the target, pigs were racing, tombola prizes were being won and the vintage carousel was delighting the children.

All of this was going on while people were browsing the stalls, meeting the Watermill Wolves, talking to local community groups, meeting Charities and listening and dancing to Kevin Terrell.

Although the cool weather and wind towards the end of the afternoon proved too much for some, feedback was very positive;

“It was so nice to have free games and lucky dip prizes for the children”, “some really nice stalls”, Fantastic atmosphere with a brilliant range of stalls, children’s games and activities for all ages”

“A big Thank You to Bexhill Lions and all involved for another fantastic community event.”

Lions in the Woods

4 years ago, as a community environment project, we cleared an area in Collington Woods and planted saplings, bluebells and other flowers. As part of regular mantenace a group of members were recently in the coppice removing bramble and weeds to ensure that the plants could flourish and be enjoyed by everybody.

Hard work, but a great opportunity to socialise and get to know new members a bit better.

Old Town celebrations

In AD772 King Offa the Second made a grant of a charter to found and endow a church in a quite corner of Sussex. Today St Peter’s Church and Bexhill Old Town play a major role in the community.

For the past 60 years the Bexhill Old Town Preservation Society (BOTPS) has supported and promoted aspects of the Old Town for public benefit. It was the celebration of this anniversary that we were invited to support two events.

Pupils walked the talk

A group of members joined the traffic marshals team to help 200 children from 3 local schools to safely move between 3 key historic locations. Each school started at a different one and then moved onto the next location, with refreshments in the Community Centre.

At the Barrack Hall Memorial Gardens they learned how in 1804, 5,000 members of the Kings German Legion were quartered there for 10 years. They visited the historic Manor Barn and Gardens and finally all met at the church to hear about the history of the village which was then followed by a concert.

A BOTPS organiser said “..a wonderful morning, it really did open the eyes of the children to the history on their doorstep.”

May Day Fair

The next day we were delighted to provide some traditional games to add to the other activities in the Manor Barn and Gardens.

With bright sunshine, visitors enjoyed our hoop-la, hopscotch, splat the rat, lucky key game, noughts and crosses and hook-a duck, all with a lucky draw prize.

Lion Alison said “It is always a pleasure to help out and support these community events and especially to give the school children such a great experience.
