Bexhill Lions support World Sight Day

Eye Pledge…Will you?

When was the last time you got an eye test?

World Sight Day is on Thursday 8 October and is supported by Bexhill Lions Club. The aim is to draw attention to a range of issues surrounding blindness and visual impairment.

Cataract, refractive errors, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, Macular Degeneration(AMD), Retina of prematurity(ROP)— All of these eye care issues impact every age group and their well-being.

What can YOU do?  Book an eye test for yourself and family members, especially those who are vulnerable: young, school-going children, the elderly and those with diabetes. With an aging world population, myopia and diabetic retinopathy are set to increase vision impairment in the coming decades.

To support World Sight Day, make a pledge today to have an eye test—and encourage others to do the same:family, friends, and business colleagues.

Find out if you’re entitled to a free NHS sight test or an optical voucher to reduce the cost of glasses or contact lenses, https://www.nhs.uk/using-the-nhs/

It was in 1925 when Helen Keller, the inspirational deaf-blind campaigner, challenged Lions to be “Knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness”. Since then Lions clubs across the world have supported projects designed to prevent blindness, restore eyesight, improve eye health and eye care and are an essential part of their focus. Lions clubs in the British Isles donate over £65,000 each year to Lions Sight Savers, a charity set up in partnership with Sightsavers.

The first World Sight Day was held on October 8, 1998, when the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) partnered with blindness prevention organisations worldwide. It is now coordinated by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) under the VISION 2020 global initiative which aims to promote a world in which nobody is needlessly visually impaired. It involves non-government organisations, professional associations, as well as eye care institutions and corporations.

Just see what you can do……. by making that pledge today.
